If not for my book club, By Any Other Name would likely have gone unread by me. Not because of the author, Jodi Picoult, whose works I admire and enjoy. And not because of the historical elements and topic since I was drawn to both. No, I might have passed over this amazing book because I felt particularly busy, and reading a sizeable book is a considerable commitment.
But it was so worth it. After a couple chapters, I couldn’t wait to get to my chill-out time, which for me happens between the end of my workday of writing and vintage shop management, and the start of dinner and evening time.
I chose the audio version, whose nine narrators made the words come alive, inviting me into the worlds of two women centuries apart, both “forced to hide behind another name.” Or in words from the book: “There once was a girl who became invisible so that her words might not be.”
I loved this book. The writing is beautiful. The message timeless (unfortunately). The historical elements illuminating, and the intertwined stories courageous, inspiring, and thought provoking. For those who relish historical fiction and meaningful storytelling, I strongly recommend Jodi Picoult’s By Any Other Name.
